Barrier methods, such as the male condom and female condom, may be used with or without a spermicide. The goal of a barrier is simple – keep the sperm away from the egg. A variety of barriers exist, with the best known being a male condom. Other options include the female condom, diaphragm, cervical cap or shield and contraceptive sponge. Barriers are the only type of contraceptive that can reduce the risk of sexually transmitted diseases. Some barriers and hormonal options can be used at the same time for increased protection against pregnancy.
